Reuther Central High School

The Reuther Education At-Large (R.E.A.L). Program

The R.E.A.L. Program is an alternative, work-study program for students who have not experienced success in other programs and are in danger of not graduating “on time”. It is a place to start anew. It is open to students who are at least 16 years of age, and who have attended two years of high school. The program concentrates on learning academic skills in practical situations, as well as the skills needed for success in the work place and to be an independent adult.

The R.E.A.L. Program is a “completion program.” Depending on the credits you bring into the program, you can earn your diploma in one to four semesters (1/2 to 2 years). The program does not provide for early graduation.

Student in the R.E.A.L. Program spend half the day on jobsite rotations, beginning with volunteer sites focusing on working with people, and eventually pursuing career interests and/or paid employment. The other half of the day is spent in school studying a coordinated curriculum in the core academic areas of English, social studies, mathematics and science.

The R.E.A.L. Program is designed to be like having a 40-hour per week job. You will be expected to meet job-like expectations: not working and poor attendance can get you “fired” from the program. Taken seriously, and committing yourself to meeting the program’s expectations, however, can lead to the development of both important skills and a self-awareness that will allow for a better life.
