Read 180

Reuther Central High School provides READ 180 classes for students in selected small schools.  Read 180 is a research-based intervention class designed to help struggling readers improve their reading ability, experience success in completing assigned reading tasks, and boost their interest and enjoyment of reading.  Specially-developed reading materials, instructional tools, and software offer Read 180 students a variety of learning opportunities.  Students are identified for the Read 180 program through test scores and teacher recommendations.

To begin with, the teacher uses a computer-based assessment to determine a lexile score for the student, which then is matched with reading material designed to meet the student’s reading level in a challenging way.  Classroom instruction includes daily whole group, computer curriculum, small group instruction and independent reading.  The computer software utilized also provides the teacher with updated skill performance information on the students that can be used to guide the small group instruction plan.  Students are tested again at the end of their participation in the class to be able to calculate improvement in their lexile score.

Read 180 software and curriculum was developed and published by Scholastic. Scholastic has correlated Read180 with state of Wisconsin model academic performance standards.
