Early Childhood Education
(State Assistant Child Care Teacher Certification)
All junior and senior students or any student 17 years of age or older
PARENTING (being offered at Reuther Quarter 3)
DESCRIPTION: Babies don’t come with an instruction booklet. This course will examine how parents can best respond to their child’s changing needs by understanding the developmental stages of children. Students will explore resources to enhance parenting skills, study stages of children. Students will explore resources to enhance parenting skills, study influences on children, and build problem-solving skills. Students will come to understand the rewards of parenting, including nurturing another person, experiencing the unconditional love of a child, and hearing “Mom” or “Dad” for the first time. Along with the rewards come responsibilities such as protecting children, providing for them, and understanding the importance of appropriate discipline. Parents are a child’s first teacher and this course will help students understand what it takes to be an effective parent.
CHILD DEVELOPMENT 1 (not being offered at Reuther 2nd Semester)
DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to help the student understand the developing child. Students will explore the effect of heredity and environment on the developing child. The physical, social, emotional, and intellectual well being of children and the various growth and development patterns will also be studied. Those students interested in a career involving children will find this course useful.
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION (being offered at Reuther Quarter 4)
DESCRIPTION: This class will provide an opportunity for students to further understand children and to prepare for entry-level employment in a childcare setting. Satisfactory completion of the course with field experience in a child care setting will qualify the student for certification as an Assistant Child Care Teacher by the Department of Public Instruction. This is the same certification offered by Gateway Technical College. Students must be at least a Junior or 17 years old to receive the certification for employability. Students must have passed one quarter of Parenting or Child Development before taking this course.
Requirements: To enroll in either of the above classes, students must be free of felony convictions or onlyreceive elective credit for the class (certification/employment will not be granted if student has a felony conviction.)
